about

The epic “Serendipity Breaking Loose” just might be my most notable improvisational recording. It consists of two juxtaposing acoustic guitar pieces which were conceived immediately after the other, as seen in the timestamped filenames. This newly conjoined track has been lifted from my two-part makeshift album The Show Must Go On which I improvised throughout August 2010. It soon became apparent that I was on a roll, as I spontaneously uploaded recording after recording, eager to prove myself as a forthcoming musician and potential recording artist.

In the middle of what I dubbed “All Hell Breaks Loose” I broke into an ad lib speech, pledging with bated breath an ambiguous refusal to dumb myself down (as heard in the SoundCloud version). It was a somewhat viscerally cringeworthy plea for moral support, amid the adversarial dubstep dross that was imminent in Plymouth's dystopian music scene, but an impetus to keep going nonetheless. By immediately proceeding "Serendipity" levels of composure, something possessed me to break into this spontaneous vehemence—where I frantically strummed my way through another extraordinary improvisation. Oftentimes it was as if the guitar was playing me (for better or worse).

I think it was a culmination of the stress I was under, feeling like a black sheep and scapegoat, amid my newfound freedom to channel repressed yearnings on my newfound instrument (priorly a keyboardist involuntarily cut short). And now considering recent times, what with the "scamdemic" revelations — hot on the heels of laughing-stock Brexit — a mere footnote in democratic furor et al, my barely controversial self-expressivity unto my unexpecting Facebook friends should well be vindicated by now. Perhaps I was earning the right to my silence all along... alas falling deeper into obscurity by way of my self-deprecating "Lo-Fi Renegade" debut.

about

Lewis Mark Aquilina Plymouth, UK

A teenaged novice guitarist whom, at the dawning of social media, endeavoured to transcend cynicism in nanny-state Britain — indivisibly via the healing power of cathartic self-expressivity.

Confined to a makeshift digital audio recorder, I developed an uncanny knack for improvising one-take guitar pieces simply whenever the mood struck. Sometimes I’d also vocalise ad-lib.
